Courses for Children and Adolescents

At the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz courses for children and adolescents are offered, in order to be prepared for a regular Degree Programme. For the course for highly gifted students and preparatory courses the online application  is required in time to the respective application deadline (Winter Term: 3 June or 3 September - ATTENTION: not offered for all instruments / voice! / Summer Term: 13 January), while for the other courses an application via an application form at the respective institute is required.

After the application (and passing the entrance exam), the enrolment has to be done in time in the Registrar´s Office (Palais Meran, Leonhardstraße 15, ground floor)!

The Course for Highly Gifted Students in Instrumental Studies comprehensively develops the required musical and artistic skills in highly gifted children and adolescents, and the technical abilities on the relevant instrument with the aim of being able to complete a regular degree programme.

Admission

Exceptional musical talent and physical aptitude for the chosen instrument are prerequisites for admission to the course for highly gifted students. These prerequisites must be verified in an admission examination. An examination committee, appointed by the Dean of Studies, makes the decision regarding admission.

There is no lower age limit for admission to the Course for Highly Gifted Students. Students can participate in the Course for Highly Gifted Students up to the age of 18 (i.e. must be 18 or below on 30 September). For students who are older than 15 years, the maximum duration of this course is two semesters.
Following successful completion of the admission examination, students will be admitted as nondegree programme students.

Attention: Some teachers are located in Oberschützen (Burgenland)!

In the preparatory courses, the musical-artistic and theoretical competences are developed which are required for an admission examination for the ordinary study programme in the chosen field of study and thus enable the attainment of the requirements defined in the respective curriculum for the admission examination in the central artistic subject and in other subjects or the attainment of further admission requirements.

ATTENTION: No entrance exams in September!

In the preparatory courses "Instrumental Studies", the musical-artistic competences as well as technical skills on the respective instrument required for highly gifted children and young people are comprehensively developed with the aim of being able to take up proper studies.

Admission

Prerequisites for admission to the preparatory courses are extraordinary musical talent, physical aptitude for the chosen instrument and corresponding previous instrumental knowledge. These prerequisites are to be verified in an admission examination. An examination board appointed by the Dean of Studies makes the decision regarding admission.

Admission to the preparatory courses is possible from the age of 15. The courses can be taken up to the age of 19 (deadline by 30th September).

Minimum age: 4 years

The focus of the "University course for Instrumental and Vocal Music" is on learning to play instruments or to sing in the sense of holistically oriented music-making.

Subject areas:

  • Early musical education for children between 4 and 7 years of age
  • Instrumental music making and singing
  • Children's and youth choir
  • Music theory


Requirements for admission to the course:

  • Age-appropriate interest in singing and music-making
  • Minimum age of 4 years
  • Registration in person at the secretary's office of Institute 5 with Mrs Nairz-Zieser or the course director using the registraion form.
